Older adults with mild cognitive impairment and sleep problems who took at least 5,000 IU of vitamin D daily scored more than 13% higher on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, a widely used screening tool, than those who took none.
The Emory University study tracked 54 adults aged 50 and older who had both sleep disturbances and mild cognitive impairment, two conditions that often show up before dementia and that affect a large share of the roughly 7 million Americans currently living with Alzheimer's.
Senior author Victoria Pak, an associate professor at Emory's Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, described this stage as a critical window for intervention, when cognitive changes are just emerging but there's still room to support brain health before decline progresses further.
The study also found no meaningful difference between vitamin D2 and D3, the two common supplement forms, suggesting the effect isn't tied to one specific type of the vitamin.
The dosage itself is worth pausing on too. At 5,000 IU daily, the amount used in this study sits well above the standard recommended daily allowance most adults are told to aim for, which is typically closer to 600 to 800 IU depending on age.
That gap is exactly why researchers are being cautious about the finding rather than treating it as a green light for high-dose supplementation on its own.
It's worth being direct about the limits here too. This was a small, observational study, which means it can show a link but can't prove vitamin D actually causes the improvement, since people who supplement more consistently may also differ from non-supplementers in other health habits the study didn't fully capture.
Pak herself cautioned that the findings aren't yet a reason to start high-dose supplementation without talking to a doctor first, and the team's next step is a randomized clinical trial specifically designed to test that causal question directly, rather than relying on the kind of observational link this first study produced.
