The pace of the robot's own progress is what makes the number strange. The same event's winning time last year sat at 21.5 seconds. One year later, the same robot model shaved off more than twelve seconds, a jump that has no real equivalent anywhere in human sprinting history. Organizers had to lay thick padded mats past the finish line too, since several robots, including the champion, couldn't decelerate safely and plowed straight into the barrier.
Speed wasn't the whole story at these games, though. The same competition included practical tasks like hammering nails into a board and making beds, and the results looked nothing like the sprint.
Robots fumbled with basic tool use, even when human operators partly guided their hands. Oregon State University robotics professor Jonathan Hurst put it plainly - real progress won't be measured on a track, it'll be measured in warehouses and factories where a humanoid can work unsupervised for hours and generate real economic value.
That gap between track performance and dexterity is exactly what makes this comparison useful. Sprinting is a fixed, repeatable motion, every millisecond mapped out in advance with no real-time decisions required. Picking up a hammer and driving a nail at the right angle demands the kind of moment-to-moment adjustment human hands do without thinking, and that's still the harder problem robotics hasn't solved.
