Starbucks Reportedly Explored a Takeover of Chipotle

Starbucks Takeover of Chipotle

Keypoints:

  • The Financial Times reported on 8 October that Starbucks worked with advisers on a possible Chipotle takeover
  • Chipotle has a market value of nearly $39 billion, and Starbucks is worth about $107 billion
  • It would be the largest restaurant deal in history if completed
  • No formal offer has been confirmed, and the Financial Times said the deal may never get off the ground
  • Chipotle shares rose about 7%, while Starbucks shares fell by roughly 2% to 3%

Starbucks has explored a takeover of Chipotle Mexican Grill, the Financial Times reported on Thursday. The coffee chain worked with advisers in recent months on a possible proposal, according to people familiar with the matter. The paper described the plans as early-stage. Starbucks declined to comment, and Chipotle did not respond.

Markets reacted fast. Chipotle shares rose about 7% by mid-afternoon in New York. Starbucks shares fell by roughly 2% to 3% after an earlier drop of more than 6%. Chipotle's market value is nearly $39 billion, and Starbucks is valued at about $107 billion.

The link between the two companies is one person. Brian Niccol led Chipotle for about six years and joined Starbucks in September 2024. He now runs the "Back to Starbucks" turnaround campaign. Semafor reported last week that Chipotle had hired bankers to prepare for a possible takeover, though people close to the company said no bid had arrived.

The size would be unprecedented. A Chipotle deal would be the biggest restaurant acquisition on record. The previous benchmark is Burger King's $11.4 billion purchase of Tim Hortons in 2014, roughly $16 billion in today's money.

Analysts are skeptical. TD Cowen analyst Andrew Charles called it a low-probability outcome at this stage. Lale Akoner of eToro said a deal could require heavy borrowing or issuing shares. Starbucks is still investing heavily in its own turnaround.

Both chains face the same pressures. Restaurants are dealing with uncertain demand from inflation-weary customers and rising operating costs. Would two growth stories become one stronger business, or one more complicated one?
