Milwaukee waited a long time for this one. The Brewers beat the Rays 4-1 in Game 5 of the World Series on Wednesday night at Tropicana Field, and they finally have their first championship.
The game itself was calm after a wild series. Young pitcher Jacob Misiorowski threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Rookie Cooper Pratt drove in two runs, and the Brewers added runs in the second, fifth and sixth innings to build a 4-0 lead. The Rays only scored in the ninth. Closer Trevor Megill got the final six outs to seal it. Misiorowski finished the series with two wins and a 0.84 ERA.
The road to the title was full of drama. Game 1 ended 3-2 and Game 2 ended 5-4, both for Milwaukee, and both were decided by one run. Then the Brewers crushed the Rays 10-1 in Game 3, scoring eight runs in the fifth inning, and Jackson Chourio went 4 for 5. Game 4 was the Rays' big moment. Pratt hit a home run in the top of the 12th to give the Brewers a lead, but Tampa Bay answered with two runs in the bottom half. Ben Williamson's walk-off single won it 4-3 and forced Game 5.
That only delayed the party. This was a team that led the majors with 103 regular season wins and swept the Dodgers in the National League Championship Series. The franchise began as the Seattle Pilots in 1969 and moved to Milwaukee a year later. Its only earlier trip to the World Series ended with a loss to St. Louis in 1982. Manager Pat Murphy is 67 and led the team to the title. The Brewers also play in one of the smallest markets in baseball, which made the win even sweeter for fans.
For the Rays, the wait goes on. They have never won a World Series in their 29 seasons and have now lost three finals, in 2008, 2020 and this year.
