Meta Buys Conductor and Will Shut Down Its Cloud on November 20

Meta Buys Conductor

Keypoints:

  • Meta acquired Conductor, an app for running several AI coding agents side by side
  • Financial terms weren't disclosed
  • New sign-ups stopped on November 4
  • Conductor Cloud goes read-only November 13 and shuts down November 20
  • OpenAI also agreed to buy Pierre Computer for Codex

Meta has bought Conductor, a startup whose app lets developers run several AI coding agents side by side. TechCrunch reported the deal on November 4 and Meta confirmed it. Financial terms weren't shared, and Conductor's founder and CEO, Charlie Holtz, said the company is joining Meta.

The catch for users is that the product is going away. New sign-ups and app downloads stopped on November 4. Conductor Cloud workspaces become read-only on November 13 and the cloud service shuts down on November 20. The local app will keep getting fixes until early 2027. Conductor worked with agents from both Anthropic and OpenAI, so developers who relied on it to juggle them will need another way to do that.

Why would Meta want it? Meta has been pushing hard into coding agents. In August it released a terminal coding agent powered by its Muse Spark model, which splits big jobs across sub-agents working in parallel.

The conductor's whole idea is managing several agents at once, so it fits neatly. Neither company has said how the technology will be used, though, and no source says it will reappear inside a Meta product.

The deal is part of a pattern. On the same day, OpenAI agreed to acquire Pierre Computer, a developer tools startup, to build a dedicated git backend into Codex, subject to regulatory approval. Both moves are about the plumbing around coding agents, like code storage and managing many agents at once, rather than the models themselves.

That points to where the competition is heading. Writing code is becoming a standard feature, and the fight now is over who owns the workflow around it. Whoever controls where agents run, how their changes are stored and how developers keep track of them has a strong position, no matter whose model is doing the typing.

For developers using Conductor, the practical takeaway is simple. Save any work sitting in the cloud workspaces before November 13, and plan to move to another tool before the cloud shuts down on November 20.
