German Factory Output Jumps to an 18-Month High

German Factory Output

Keypoints:

  • German industrial production rose 2.0% month on month in August, against a forecast of 0.5%
  • It is the strongest monthly gain since March 2025
  • Construction output jumped more than 9%, and machinery production rose over 5%
  • Automotive output fell by more than 5%
  • Leading economic institutes raised their 2026 growth forecast for Germany to 1.3%

Germany's statistics agency Destatis reported on 7 October that industrial production rose 2.0% in August. Economists had expected 0.5%, and none predicted a jump this large. The gain more than erased July's fall of 1.2% and lifted output to its highest level in a year and a half. Compared with a year earlier, production is up 2.3%.

Construction did most of the work. Output in that sector rose 9.3%, supported by public contracts for upgrading infrastructure. Specialized construction and finishing trades climbed 13.1%. Machinery and equipment production added more than 5%.

The picture elsewhere was weaker. Automotive output fell by more than 5%. Energy-intensive industries slipped 0.5% from July. On a three-month basis, production rose a modest 0.4% for June to August compared with the previous three months.

Officials kept expectations in check. The economy ministry said industrial activity overall remains subdued. ING economist Carsten Brzeski took a more positive view. He said Germany's cyclical rebound regained momentum in August after July's setback.

The wider forecast is improving too. Leading economic institutes recently raised their 2026 growth outlook for Germany to 1.3%. Bloomberg linked the recovery to public spending on infrastructure and defense. The next checkpoints are August trade data and a first estimate of third-quarter growth in late October.
