Astronomers Just Found Out a Space Rock They've Watched Since 1857 Was Never What They Thought

Asteroid 44 Nysa was discovered by astronomer Hermann Goldschmidt back in 1857, and for nearly 170 years it sat in the books as one of the brightest, most closely watched objects in the entire asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
Even so, nobody had ever actually resolved what it looked like up close. Earlier studies, including passes from the Hubble Space Telescope, hinted the object might be elongated or possibly two-part, but the true shape stayed out of reach.
That finally changed when researchers pointed two of the most advanced telescopes on Earth at it, the SHARK-VIS instrument on the Large Binocular Telescope in Arizona and the SPHERE instrument on the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile. The team borrowed a technique normally used to hunt for distant exoplanets and applied specialized image processing to strip away the bright glow surrounding the asteroid, which had been masking its real shape and hiding faint companions nearby.
What emerged were the sharpest images of Nysa ever captured, spanning roughly 47 miles across, and they revealed two large valleys wrapping around the asteroid's surface, features the team is calling "colli," essentially neck-like seams connecting what look like three separate lobes fused into one body.
If that structure holds up under further study, it would make Nysa the first confirmed contact trinary ever documented, a formation scientists believe forms either through three fragments slowly drifting together and gently sticking over millions of years, or through a violent ancient collision that reshaped the object entirely.
Buried in the same dataset was a second surprise nobody had gone looking for: a small moon roughly half a mile wide, now cataloged as S/2026 (44) 1, quietly orbiting just over 100 miles from Nysa's surface without ever being detected before.
Researchers say the next step is pointing instruments like the James Webb Space Telescope at Nysa to nail down its composition, and possibly settling once and for all how objects like this, and maybe even the rocky planets we live on, actually come together.
