Keypoints

  • AMD announced a deal on September 28 to buy World Labs for about $8.2 billion
  • The whole deal is paid in AMD stock
  • Fei-Fei Li will become AMD's executive vice president and chief scientist
  • World Labs builds AI that can understand and create 3D worlds
  • The deal is expected to close by the end of 2026, pending approvals

AMD, the chipmaker, just made one of its biggest AI moves yet. It agreed to buy World Labs, the startup led by well-known AI researcher Fei-Fei Li. World Labs works on what it calls spatial intelligence. In simple words, that is AI that understands space the way people do. Its tools can turn text, images or video into 3D worlds, and they can also help robots learn and practice in simulated spaces.

After the deal closes, Li will report directly to AMD CEO Lisa Su. The World Labs team will keep working on AI research inside AMD.

AMD says the reason is simple. To build great chips, you need to understand how AI models are changing. Having model experts close to the chip designers should help AMD build hardware, software and systems that fit what new AI needs.

This is not a surprise partnership. AMD has worked with World Labs since 2025 and invested in it earlier this year. It is also AMD's second planned acquisition of 2026, which shows how hard the company is pushing to keep up in the AI race.

The deal still needs regulatory approval before it becomes final. If it goes through, it could help AMD move deeper into areas like robotics and simulation, where AI has to deal with the real, physical world.
