Keypoints:
- Google released Gemini 4 Carbon last week
- Reporting says it narrowly edges out Claude Opus 5.5 in rankings
- Early access goes to cyber defenders through Google's Fairwind program
- Google says it worked with the US government on pre-release testing
- Google claims it blocked every attempt in a prompt injection benchmark
Google is back in the frontier AI race. Last week it released Gemini 4 Carbon, and according to Tom's Hardware it has taken the top spot on intelligence rankings, narrowly edging out Claude Opus 5.5. After a year of irregular releases, analysts see it as a real comeback for Google.
The rollout is deliberately slow. Instead of opening the model to everyone, Google is giving access to cyber defenders first through a program called Fairwind, with wider availability coming later. Google also says it worked with the US government's voluntary process for testing models before release, so the most capable systems are getting more careful staging than they used to.
Safety and reliability are a big part of the pitch. Google says Carbon held up against every attempt in the Gray Swan indirect prompt injection benchmark, which tests whether hidden instructions tucked into a webpage or document can trick a model into doing something it shouldn't.
It also claims the model makes about half as many unsupported claims as Gemini 4 Argon, the model it debuted not long before, and benchmarks reportedly show it as the least likely of the top models to hallucinate. Those are Google's numbers on its chosen tests, so independent results will matter.
Context helps here. AI rankings change fast in 2026, and Gemini 4 Argon, which leads on breadth across many of Google's own tables, also has a limited Fairwind rollout. Its announced introductory pricing isn't purchasable yet. So Carbon arrives as part of a staged approach rather than a big public launch, with security teams getting first look.
The timing is busy too. OpenAI and Anthropic are both rumored to have new models close, though neither company has confirmed anything. That means Carbon's spot at the top could be short lived, which is pretty normal for this year's pace.
